Winner of both the Grand Jury and Audience Awards for World Cinema Documentary at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, this moving documentary focuses on the struggle of a young woman – Afghan refugee Sonita Alizadeh – to escape forced marriage and follow her dream of becoming a famous hip hop star.
A talk with special guests Nipa Banerjee (University of Ottawa, International Development and Global Studies) and Jamaal Jackson Rogers (JustJamaal the Poet), exploring the experiences of women in Afghanistan, forced marriage, artistic expression, activism and other select themes and issues highlighted by the film, will follow the screening.

About SONITA
If 18-year old Sonita had a say in things, Michael Jackson would be her father and Rihanna her mother. She captures her dream of being a famous rapper in her scrapbook. For the time being, her only fans are the other teenage girls in a Tehran shelter. There, Sonita, a refugee from Afghanistan, gets counselling for the traumas she has suffered and guidance in shaping her future. Her family has a very different future planned for her: as a bride she’s worth $9,000. What’s more, Iran forbids women from singing in public for men they are not related to. How can Sonita still succeed in making her dreams come true?
Director Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami ends up personally involved in answering that question, reigniting the discussion as to how documentary makers should relate to their subjects. This is just one of the many unexpected twists in an exciting journey replete with the setbacks and successes of a young woman looking for her own path. خلاصه داستان فیلم: سونیتا علیزاده در آستانه ۱۹ سالگی چهره ای شناخته شده است. او رپ می خواند و برای دفاع از حقوق زنان در کشورهای اسلامی و علیه ازدواج زودهنگام دختران در افغانستان فعالیت می کند. به تازگی رخساره قائم مقامی٬ فیلمساز ایرانی مستندی به نام «سونیتا» درباره زندگی این دختر افغان ساخته است که هفته پیش در جشنواره بین المللی آمستردام به نمایش درآمد و جایزه ویژه تماشاگران را نیز بدست آورد.
سونیتا که خود نیز از جمله قربانیان سنت دختر فروشی در افغانستان است می گوید: «مادرم تلاش کرد که من را مجبور به ازدواج کند. این البته به این معنی نیست که او من را دوست نداشت. او عاشق من است. او هم به زور مجبور شده بود که چشم بر این عشق ببند چون راه دیگری نمی شناخت. سنت و فقر او را به این کار وا داشته بود. اما بعدها از طریق آهنگ های من بود که او هم سرانجام متوجه شد که در درون من چه می گذرد و اینکه من بعنوان یک دختر می توانم کاری بکنم و می توانم آینده ام را رقم بزند.
خانم قائم مقامی با سونیتا در جریان مهاجرتش به ایران آشنا شد و در حال ساخت مستندی از وی بود زمانی که مادر سونیتا برای تأمین هزینه ازدواج پسرش، تصمیم گرفت او را بفروشد و شوهر دهد. فیلمساز ایرانی مجبور به دخالت شد و مبلغ ۲ هزار دلار به خانواده سونیتا پرداخت. وی با اشاره به این مساله می گوید: «بزرگ ترین چالش این فیلم هنگام دیدار سونیتا و مادرش رخ داد. مشکل اصلی این بود که اگر دخالت می کردم بر روند فیلم تاثیر می گذاشتم. اگر هیچ کمکی هم نمی کردم با انسانیت و رابطه انسانی چه می کردم؟ آخر مگر می شود یک گوشه نشست و فقط نظاره گر ماجرا بود؟»
آهنگ های سونیتا علیزاده به ویژه ترانه «دختر فروشی» شهرتی جهانی یافت و اندکی بعد از انتشار آن٬ وی موفق به دريافت يك بورس تحصيلی در رشته موسیقی در آمریکا شد و اکنون در این کشور زندگی می کند
