Rigoberta Menchu: Daughter of the Maya

Documentary on Nobel Peace Prize Winner Rigoberta Menchú Tum opens 2016 One World Film Festival

One World Arts is proud to partner with the Nobel Women’s Initiative to share the inspiring and moving life story of Nobel Peace Prize Winner and indigenous Mayan activist Rigoberta Menchú Tum at the 27th annual One World Film Festival on September 29th.

Born in the remote mountainous region of Guatemala, Menchú Tum lost all of her family and most of her village to a brutal civil war which killed hundreds of thousands of Guatemalans, the majority of them Mayan. Rather than be intimidated into silence by the horrors she witnessed, Menchú Tum spoke out and worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the atrocities committed against indigenous peoples in her country and other Guatemalans.

Rigoberta Menchu: Daughter of the Maya tells the story of a woman who risked her life to bring peace to her country and seek justice for Guatemalans who were brutalized during the country’s the 36-year-long civil war. In 1992, Rigoberta Menchú Tum was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “in recognition of her work for social justice and ethno-cultural reconciliation based on respect for the rights of indigenous peoples.”

Join One World Arts, the Nobel Women’s Initiative, and our host for the evening, Nigel Newlove (Nation to Nation, APTN), for the Ottawa premiere of this engaging documentary and a post-film discussion on indigenous resistance in Guatemala and Canada, September 29th at 6PM at the Library and Archives Canada (395 Wellington St.) in Ottawa. Advance tickets can be purchased from now until September 29th online here.
