Juan is an Tz’utujil Mayan whose family has fished Lake Atitlan – one of the most beautiful lakes in the world – for many generations. Working together with other members of the local fishing cooperative – Chajil Ch’upup (Guardians of the Tule) – Juan labours with love to sustain the integrity and viability of the lake that supported his ancestors, marking the way forward for his generation and the next.

En plein milieu d’une crise environnementale en Chine qui ne cesse de prendre de l’ampleur, des journalistes, réalisateurs et scientifiques découvrent un oasis d’air frais, des montagnes verdoyantes, des bêtes sauvages et un ancien réseau de réserves écologiques entretenues par des moines bouddhistes dans les régions montagneuses du sud-ouest de la Chine.
Chajil Ch’upup

Chajil Ch’upup (« Gardiens du scirpe ») jette un regard sur le monde de Juan, un Maya Tz’utujil dont la famille pêche sur le lac Atitlan depuis des générations. Sa génération tout particulièrement est aux prises avec de graves situations engendrées par la nature et aussi par l’homme. Les membres de la coop de pêche locale se sont unis afin de trouver des pistes de solutions menant à une meilleure qualité de vie.
Sayachapis

Sayachapis est désormais le seul habitant de Indian Island, une petite île hors-réseau située au large de la côte de Vancouver. Au pensionnat indien où il a vécu dix ans, on l’appelait simplement « 52 ». Il raconte en détail son histoire de survivant : travaux forcés, faim, viol, violence physique, et autres horreurs qui dépassent l’entendement. Dit-il : « Je suis toujours vivant. Disons que ça va. »

Cinq artistes autochtones provenant de diverses régions du Canada se réunissent au Centre Wabano à Ottawa dans le but de concevoir une plaque patrimoniale qui rendra hommage aux survivants des pensionnats indiens. Le défi est de taille, puis la plaque évolue en un objet doté d’une âme.
