Five Questions with Mar Y Sol, Director of Sayachapis – Ottawa Premiere September 26th

“This film, for me, has a lot of meaning. My first thought about it is how does one come to terms with their past. If Sayachapis was able to heal himself from his suffering, if he found the strength to get help and heal himself, anybody can do it,” filmmaker Mar Y Sol told Ottawa Indie Fest.

Canadian filmmaker Mar Y Sol’s short documentary Sayachapis has its OTTAWA PREMIERE this Saturday, September 26th at the 2015 One World Film Festival. Sayachapis is one of four short documentaries screening at at the National Gallery of Canada (380 Sussex Drive, Ottawa), 12:30pm to 2:30pm, as part of our Canadian Documentary Shorts program with Ottawa Indie Fest and hosted by playwright and director Alanis King. A conversation with Mar Y Sol and other filmmakers will follow the screenings.

Check out Ottawa Indie Fest’s 5 Questions with Mar Y Sol to find out more about this inspiring short documentary which tells the story of Sayachapis, a residential school survivor who lives on a small island off the coast of Vancouver. Sayachapis lives a solitary life. His memories of hard labour, starvation, rape, broken bones and other unimaginable horrors of a childhood spent in the residential school system remain vivid, and yet he is able to say: “I am still alive, I am still okay.”
